By the time Shep reached the Green Room, there were three guns on the prop table. Cody was standing on the vanity table pushing the ceiling tiles up with his hands and he was reaching for something. The rest of the cast was standing by, silent and watchful. “What are you doing?” Shep asked him. “Where did these guns come from?”
Cody retrieved another gun and jumped down to the floor. He gathered all four guns in his hands and approached Shep. “Can I put these in your truck?”
“Where did you get those?”
“Come on Shep! If my uncle finds out...”
“Did you break into the evidence room at the police station?” Shep demanded.
“No. Carl and his friends do that. These are mine,” Cody said.
“Yours?”
“Yeah.” He looked around the room at the rest of the cast. “My uncle’s coming here to search the theater for weapons.”
Everyone scattered and began pulling guns from hidden places within the Green Room.
Shep was dumbfounded.
“Can I put this in your truck?” Shelby asked. She was dressed for the play, wearing her hoop skirt and holding a rifle.
“What the hell is going on here?” Shep demanded.
“This is Fort Kenton, Montana,” Cody stated.
“So?”
“Everybody has a gun,” Cody told him.
“This is insane,” Shep retorted. “No, you cannot hide your weapons in my truck. Do you have permits for these guns?”
“Would we show them to you, if we didn’t?” Shelby asked. “You’re one of them.”
“One of them?” Shep inquired.
“A cop,” Marcy spoke up. She folded her arms over her chest, glaring at him.
“Do you have a gun, too?” he asked her.
“It’s not in here,” she replied, evenly.
“Come on Shep,” Shelby begged. “If Joe sees these guns, he’ll confiscate them and if those assholes from Huxley County get them, we’ll never get them back.”
“You’re the school teacher in this play. You work behind the desk of a nice hotel,” Shep said. “What do you need that rifle for?”
Shelby gave him a nervous smile. “Deer hunting.”
“Deer hunting?” Shep asked. “Right.” He pointed to the prop table. “Stack them up, right there.”
“Traitor,” Darrell mumbled. “Nobody made you give up your gun.”
“I turned mine in yesterday,” Shep said.
“After you shot a man six times,” Darrell muttered. He walked over and placed his gun on the table. “It doesn’t matter. I have more guns at home.”
The rest of the cast scowled at Shep and followed behind Darrell...all but Cody.
“I’m not giving up my guns,” Cody said. “I’ll take them to my house.”
“You’ll miss Act One,” Marcy taunted. “Face it, Dakota Flynn. He’s got you by the balls, literally. You owe him now. You have to do whatever he says.”
“No, I don’t. I have rights. I’m allowed to protect myself,” Cody insisted. He started across the room, to the back door.
“Just hold on,” Shep said. He looked at Cody and then his gaze scanned over the faces of his fellow cast members. “What are all of you so afraid of? You have a police force in this town. It’s our job to protect you.”
“Maybe they don’t trust a gay cop,” Marcy taunted.
